On June 23-25, 2017, the conference of the Byzantine Gold Coins in the Late Antiquity, co-organized by The Institute for the History of Ancient Civilizations, Sun Yat-sen University, and Cologne University, was held in Northeast Normal University. About 40 Scholars from Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Nankai University, Hebei University, Sun Yat-sen University, Northeast Normal University and Cologne University et al. attended the conference. President of Northeast Normal University, Prof. Han Dongyu and Prof. Chen Zhiqiang, the Director of the NKU’s Eastern Europe Research Center, attended the opening ceremony.
With the theme of “Byzantine Gold Coins in the Late Antiquity”, a series of questions were discussed in the conference, including the theory of Late Antiquity, Medieval European cultural exchange, and China's ancient Silk Road etc. Scholars have submitted several papers to make academic interpretations of relevant issues from different perspectives. Focused on the significant role that Byzantine Empire played in the oriental and western relations during the Late Antiquity, scholars deepen the understanding of the ancient Silk Road and Chinese national “The Belt and Road” strategy.
In recent years, the Byzantine research continues to develop. Among various Byzantine Studies academic conference, the conference of the Byzantine Gold Coins in the Late Antiquity was the highest level.
