On October 19, 2017, Prof. Wu Yanhong from the Social Sciences Academy in Zhejiang University, gave a lecture on “The Historical Studies of Ming Dynasty” in Nankai University. Hosted by Prof. He Xiaorong, about 30 teacher and students attended the lecture.
Prof. Wu Yanhong reviewed the existing situation and current research status. She explained the concept of the judge’s verdict and used vivid cases. The verdict refers to the actual judicial process and the judicial related documents, whose narrow sense refers to the first verdict official trial language. She also analyzed the relationship between the Ming Dynasty and its verdict system.
Prof. He Xiaorong summarized Prof. Wu Yanfang’s speech, which roughly outlined the operation mechanism of judicial practice and local custom in Ming Dynasty. Prof. Wu Yanfang’s speech inspired everyone to think about the legal system in Ming Dynasty. The attendees asked several interesting questions and got valuable suggestions. For example, one student wandered the roles that emotion, reason, and law played in the Ming Dynasty. Prof. Wu emphasized the importance of discussing concepts. She also pointed out that the heavier the punishment was, the less influence that the emotion factor exerted generally.
