The Institute of Historical Research was founded in 1978. Then, it had four research sections of the Ming and Wing histories, Zhou Enlai Studies, American History and Japanese History. The first Director of the institute was Professor Wu Tingqiu and the second Director Professor Zhang Youlun. The institute of Historical Research was reorganized when College of History was founded. It has Section of the History of the Ming Dynasty, Section of the History of the Wing Dynasty, Section of the Pre-Qin History. Section of the Sui and Tang Dynasties, and Section of the Yuan Dynasty. There are 5 professors (including 5 doctoral Supervisors),2 associate professors, 1 lecturer, among them 5 hold a degree of Ph.D., in the fields of histories of the Ming and the Qing Dynasties. Professor Nan Bingwen is the Director currently.

 

The institute has focuses on dynastic histories such as the Ming Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty. 15 national or international academic conferences have been sponsored or co-sponsored by the institute since 1979. The international Conference on the Ming and the Qing Histories sponsored by Professor Zheng Tianting in 1980 was one of the large-scale international conferences after the Reform and Open Policy and has got great influence.
