History of China

   Based on the dynastic history, the program features the study of social history, history of ideas, institutional history and the history of historiography. It is designed to train talents who have excellent skills for the study of history, keep abreast of the new developments of the discipline, and meet the needs of society. Under the training program, students will have a solid grasp of historical materials, and be able to engage in preliminary scientific research, teaching and related work in the discipline.

 

World history

To train students under the master program for world history to have a grasp of the basic theories, basic methods and systematic knowledge of world history, especially developing students’ ability to use professional basic theories and methods to observe, analyze, and solve multi-tier problems in world history, including the methods of thinking, research skills (foreign language competence and modern research techniques) and ability to communicate accurately, particularly innovation capability, in the field of world history discipline.

 

Archaeology

Based on the characteristics of this major, the program trains high-level, application-oriented and research-oriented talents who have good political and ideological quality as well as professional ethics, concept of modern archaeology, a good grasp of knowledge and skills in archaeology and related fields, and competence for high-level business and management for cultural relics and archaeology research institutes, museums of various types, cultural relics management institutions as well as research institutions, publishing institutions, social organizations, cultural relics shops, auction houses, etc.

 

Training mode

Master’s students are trained by the tutors under the guidance of the steering group, while the research office plays a coordinating role. The teaching and research office and the steering group collectively formulate the training program, and are responsible for the entrance examinations and admission of master’s students, course teaching, review of thesis proposal, organization of mid-term examinations, review of dissertations and oral defense. The tutor is responsible for guiding master’s students to formulate study plans, select the topic of dissertation, write the master’s thesis, etc.

 

The master’s program focuses on a solid grasp of basic knowledge. All students are required to read literature related to their major in the original, write reading notes, and master the basic skills and methods for conducting scientific research.

 

It adopts the principle of profound foundation and a broad scope, and determines the teaching plan of required and elective courses. Students are encouraged to take courses given by different teachers in order to expand their scope of knowledge. The teaching and research office encourages teachers and students to exchange what has been learned from research, familiarize themselves with research trends, and discuss problems in scientific research in the form of reading classes and salons.

 

Curriculum and credit requirements

The master’s program for this major adopts the credit system. Corresponding credits are given if the students are academically qualified, and are used as a necessary reference for assessment and graduation. Methods of examination include written examination, oral examination, submission of course work or reports, examination, etc. International master’s students for whom Chinese is used as the language of instruction are required to obtain not less than 36 credits, including 12 credits for university-level public compulsory courses, and no less than 12 credits for major compulsory courses. International master’s students for whom English is used as the language of instruction are required to obtain not less than 30 credits, including 3 credits for university-level public compulsory course Introduction to China, and no less than 12 credits for major compulsory courses. Master’s students in interdisciplinary major should generally take three undergraduate core courses in their major.

 

Master’s students under this program should basically obtain the corresponding credits and complete the basic learning and training regarding foundation and knowledge of the specialty at the end of the third semester.

 

Other regulations shall be subject to the relevant documents of the Graduate School of Nankai University and the school.
