Training objectives
History of China
To train doctoral students to master the basic theories and methods of the major, gain a thorough understanding of the knowledge system of the major, keep abreast of the trends of the discipline and the cutting-edge issues of international academic research, have a thorough grasp of the history and latest developments of the discipline, be proficient in using scientific research methods to independently engage in academic research and practical work; and make discovery and innovation in professional exploration. Doctoral students should be proficient in at least one foreign language, and able to read foreign literature and conduct academic exchanges and communication with foreign scholars.
World history
To train students to gain a solid basic theoretical knowledge of the discipline and strong competence in historical research, especially developing students’ ability to use professional basic theories and methods to observe, analyze, and solve multi-tier problems in world history, improve the methods of thinking, research skills (foreign language competence and modern research techniques) and innovation ability in the discipline of world history, have a thorough grasp of the history and latest developments of the discipline, keep abreast of the trends of the discipline and the cutting-edge issues of international academic research, and be proficient in using scientific research methods to independently engage in academic research and practical work.
Archaeology
This discipline is aimed at training senior professional and technical personnel, professional managers and interdisciplinary talents with professional and management expertise in the fields of Chinese cultural relics, archaeology and museology. It will train doctoral students to have a full and systematic grasp of the theoretical knowledge and advanced research methods of archaeology and museology, so that they have the ability to skillfully use professional theories and methods for theoretical research and practical work in the field of Chinese museology and archaeology. The training program pays special attention to training students' research ability and practical ability.
Training mode
1. The mode of training for doctoral students adopts the training mechanism combining collective training by the steering group and the individual responsibility of the tutor, emphasizing the training system in which the tutors play a main role and the steering group is the support. The doctoral students’ steering group is composed of 3-5 experts who have the title of associate professor or above and doctoral degrees in the discipline and related disciplines. The steering group is collectively responsible for the entrance examinations (including preliminary and secondary examinations) and admission of doctoral students, the formulation of training plans, curriculum arrangement and implementation of thesis proposals, and reporting to the school on the preparations for dissertation review and oral defense. The doctoral students’ steering group is specifically responsible for the entrance examinations (including preliminary and secondary examinations) for graduate students, review and admission, adjustment and formulation of training plans, finalization and arrangement of curriculum plans, course teaching, implementation of thesis proposals, mid-term screening and inspection, deliberation and review of academic dissertations, and arrangements for dissertation defense.
2. Doctoral tutors must be accredited by the academic degree committee of the university or school. The tutor is responsible for guiding the arrangement of the doctoral study plan, examining credits and study progress of graduate students, selecting research topics, guiding and supervising dissertation writing, arranging internship for graduate students, and other related matters.
3. The doctoral training adopts the forms of systematic course learning, participation in scientific research, attending lectures by professors, and classroom discussions. The teaching focuses on seminars, and lectures, seminars and practice are combined. While emphasizing the collective guidance for various disciplines, it also emphasizes that tutors teach students according to students’ aptitude and give full play to their own initiative, so that doctoral students have consciousness, initiative, and creativity in the course of studies.
4. The basic length of schooling for doctoral students is a flexible period of 4 years, and the maximum period (including retention of student status and period of suspension of schooling) is 6 years.
5. Students under this program will be trained in accordance with the relevant documents and regulations stipulated by the university and school.
Curriculum and credit requirements
Doctoral students under this program generally complete credit-bearing courses in the first academic year. International doctoral students are required to obtain not less than 18 credits, including 10 credits for university-level public compulsory courses and not less than 4 credits for major compulsory courses.
Other regulations shall be subject to the relevant documents of the Graduate School of Nankai University and the school.
