Chen Zhiqiang

Professor at the Faculty of History of Nankai University, Dean of the Department of World History and a discipline leader, born in Tianjin but having his ancestral home in Shenyang, Liaoning Province. He graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy of Aristotle University in Greece in 1994, with a doctorate in history and archaeology. He concurrently serves as the Deputy Director of the European Studies Center of Nankai University, the Director of the Eastern European Byzantine Research Center, and the Deputy Director of the World Modern and Contemporary History Research Center, a key base under the Ministry of Education. He was elected as the executive council member and Deputy Chairman of the Chinese Research Association for World Medieval History in 1995. He was elected as the Chairman of the Tianjin Historical Science Society in 2009. He served as a member of the Discipline Review Group (History Group) of the Sixth Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council and a member of the Discipline Review Group (World History Group) of the Seventh Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, and a member of the Review Committee of the National Social Science Fund of China. He served as the Dean of the Faculty of History from 2006 to 2011. He was engaged in collaborative research and lecturing at Harvard University, Princeton University, University of Athens, University of Helsinki, University of Duisburg, National Cheng Kung University, etc., and the research areas cover Byzantine history and culture, world medieval history, European history, Christian history, etc. He won the gold medal of the “Highest Literary and Artistic Award”, approved by the Greek Parliament and signed by the President of Greece and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Third Prize for Outstanding Social Science Achievement issued by the Ministry of Education, the Second Prize (Cooperation) for Teaching Achievement issued by the Ministry of Education, the First Prize of the Paper Competition held by Chinese Research Association of World Ancient and Medieval History and the first and second prizes of Tianjin Award for Excellent Research Achievements in Social Sciences. He receives support under the “Cross-century Excellent Talent Cultivation Program” by the State Education Commission, and receives a special allowance of the State Council. As a PI, he has completed a number of research projects.
